But Kung Fu Panda 3, while generous in cuteness and sunset-backdrop beauty, stands as an unnecessary reminder that even the best gag probably shouldn’t power three full films, even afternoon-killers for the kiddos. That’s a sturdy gag, endearing and adaptable: Adorable Creature Oscar Isaac works a variation on it some ten minutes into The Force Awakens, tipping us off to the welcome fact that even for Star Wars people it’s presumptuous to don a cape and death-mask. Then the battle music fades and that adorable creature breaks badass character to remind us it’s totally relatable, even human: It wheezes to catch its breath, it shouts “Awesome!” in disbelief at its own stunt choreography, it asks with gentle awkwardness whether all this kung-foolery is maybe a little much. A ridiculous, adorable creature executes some extravagant action-flick flourish - vaulting over roofs, dropping a bad guy, striking a poster-perfect superhero pose. There’s essentially one joke in the Kung Fu Panda movies. PH: We definitely want to put out more, and we intentionally crafted the finale of the first season to resolve a lot of story points, but also to open the door for the possibility of more stories.Kung Fu Panda: Teaching American kids that other cultures are hilarious since ’08 Dreamworks GR: Specifically for this series, do you see it continuing? Or do you think it ends at a good point? The door's always open for Po, and for Kung Fu Panda. Then it's basically like, “I just want to throw them into this situation.” We're not trying to wring out story after story, we're trying to spend time with this character that we love. PH: The key to any franchise is having a really strong lead character, like James Bond, Austin Powers, or Po. GR: What is next for Kung Fu Panda? Do you see yourselves adding more to the series? He doesn't just bring a good vocal performance, he brings a great attitude that everybody picks up on. When you have people in upper positions on a show, who put out that kind of attitude, it spreads through the whole production. He came on to the show, and it's been a blast.

Plus the fact that animators, designers, and everybody gets better all the time. It’s like, now I can make this sword imperfect, instead of having it all be the same tone. It's funny because where the technology gets better is with imperfections. You can get things to look very detailed and textured now. Since I did Legends of Awesomeness, the technology has improved a lot.
Talk to me about how that affects the animation process. GR: You mentioned that you had a fairly limited budget. In fact, I don't even need to consider that. I think, considering that, our show is really fantastic.

The other challenge was that TV works with limited budgets generally. Shaunt and I both brought a lot of experience into the series, which was really helpful.
